A finales de 2009 realicé una residencia de artista en el norte de Finlandia. Ahí conocí el frío extremo y cómo los hombres luchaban contra él: ropa interior térmica que consistía en unas mallas y camiseta de manga larga ajustadas con estampados muy variopintos. Me quedé impresionado con la similitud que ofrecía esta indumentaria a los trajes con los que van ataviados los superhéroes.
Durante mi estancia aparecieron unas controvertidas declaraciones de la escritora estonia finlandesa Sofi Oksanen en la televisión holandesa que dejaban muy baja la imagen del hombre finés acusándoles de alcohólicos, aburridos y poco productivos.
Estas declaraciones generaron mucha polémica al rededor de la identidad masculina finlandesa. A partir de esta situación inicié el proyecto. Hice una campaña publicitaria local con el nombre de “Todo finlandés tiene un superhéroe dentro, ven y déjate fotografiar en ropa interior”. Se realizaron tres convocatorias en tres puntos diferentes de la zona norte de Finlandia; en la Universidad de ingeniería de Oulu, en el Päätalo Institute de Taivalkoski y el Centro de Arte Kulttuurikaupila en Ii.
En las sesiones fotográficas me di cuenta de que los hombres, al pedirles que “sacaran el superhéroe que llevan dentro” actuaban mostrando su idea de supermasculinidad, exagerando al máximo su idea de lo que es el hombre. Cuanta más gente había, más se generaba un ambiente lúdico que permitía a los espontáneos modelos actuar sin complejos y liberarse de su pudor a través del humor.
Una vez en España me planteé cómo podría mostrar estas fotos. Ahí es donde la idea de colección tomó importancia en la resolución formal del proyecto. De repente me vi como un entomólogo analizando una serie de insectos exóticos a la vuelta de su viaje a un lugar extraño. El carácter colorido de las mallas me recordaba a las alas de mariposa, por lo que decidí aludir a ese tipo de exposición de especcímenes con alfileres.
El hecho de escalarlos a un tamaño inferior a diez centímetros y recortarlos siguiendo su silueta les da a cada individuo una nueva manera de existir, una nueva naturaleza, que me permite analizarlos desde la otroriedad, pudiendo buscar similitudes o diferencias entre las muestras tomadas.

Last months of 2009 I realized an Artist in Residence in North Finland. There, I met the extreme cold and how men fought against it: thermal underwear based on long johns and long sleves t-shirt, both usually tight and surprisingly colorful. I was really impress of how similar their outfit is to the superhero ones.
During my staying in the small village of Ii, the Stonian Finnish writer Sofi Oksanen was talking in media about Finnish men and how alcoholic, boring and unproductive they are.
These words created such a polemic around the Finnish men identity. This was the starting point of my project. I made an advertising campaign under the slogan: Every Finnish man has a superhero inside, come and get photographed in underwear”. We took photos in three different points: The Oulu University, the Päätalo Institute in Taivalkoski and the Kulttuurikaupila Art Center in Ii.
In the photo shootings I realized that when I asked men to “show up their own superhero” they were showing their own perception of “super-masculinity”, exaggerating as much as possible their idea of what a man is. The more people there were in the room the more playful the situation was and that allowed men to act spontaneous, without complexes, getting rid of their shyness throughout humor.
Once in Spain I wonder how could I show those pictures. In that moment the idea of collection became really important in the formal solution of the project. Suddenly I saw myself as an entomologist analyzing a series of rare insects coming back from an exotic place. The colorful quality of the outfit reminded me the butterflies wings so I decided to exhibit each one in the same way butterflies are displayed.
The fact of scaling them to a size under ten centimeters and cut them out give each of them a new way of being that allows me to analyze them from the otherness, finding similarities or differences between them.
